Alex Drummond
Editor-in-Chief, Calgary, AB
Alex Drummond is the Editor-in-Chief of AlbertaPoker. He has spent more than ten years covering online poker markets in Canada and Europe, with a focus on the regulatory transitions that decide who actually launches and who does not. He grew up in Calgary, started his career on the live circuit covering the WSOP Circuit Calgary stop at Deerfoot, and now lives a short drive from the room he first reported from.
Alex’s reporting has appeared in PokerNews, Cardplayer Lifestyle, and Poker Industry PRO. Before AlbertaPoker, he ran the regulated-markets desk at a Toronto-based industry publication, where he covered Ontario’s 2022 launch from the operator side and read every public version of the AGCO Standards. That work informs the methodology he uses here.
What I cover
- Operator reviews and scoring. Every review on this site goes through Alex. He sets the rating methodology, weights the categories, and signs the editorial verdict at the end of each review.
- Regulated-market analysis. Bill 48, AGLC’s Internet Gaming Standards, the registration process, and the Crown-corporation operating model.
- Software and player experience. Multi-tabling, lobby filters, time banks, hand-history availability, mobile clients.
- Live poker in Alberta. Deerfoot, River Cree, Grey Eagle, Century Casinos, Camrose. The WSOP Circuit Calgary stop in particular.
How I work
Each operator review is based on observed testing, not marketing copy. For pre-launch operators, that means careful comparison against the same operator’s live products in Ontario and the UK, plus a clear separation between “confirmed for Alberta” and “expected based on other jurisdictions.” After launch, every review will be retested at least quarterly, with deposit and withdrawal time recorded, support response time measured, and any change in methodology flagged in the corrections log.
I write to be useful to a player who wants to make a decision, not to a marketing audience. That means saying when an operator is the right pick, when it is not, and when the honest answer is “wait until launch and check again.”
Editorial disclosure
I do not hold personal accounts at any operator for the purpose of receiving affiliate commissions. Test accounts used for reviews are funded from the editorial budget and closed at the end of the review cycle. I have no equity, consulting, or advisory relationship with any operator listed on this site. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on this page and on the relevant review.
Reviews follow the methodology described on the Editorial Policy page. Corrections are tracked openly in the Corrections Log. If you spot something wrong, email editor@albertapoker.com and Maya and I will look at it.
