Maya Chen

Senior Poker Analyst, Edmonton, AB

Maya Chen is a Senior Poker Analyst at AlbertaPoker and the editor responsible for fact-checking everything on the site. She lives in Edmonton, has covered iGaming regulation across three Canadian provinces, and treats “reads cleanly” as a lower bar than “reconciles to a primary source.”

Before AlbertaPoker, Maya wrote market analysis for Poker Industry PRO and iGaming Business. Her work covered Ontario’s post-launch traffic curve, the gap between operator-claimed and observed liquidity, and the structural reasons online poker revenue lags casino and sports betting in every regulated North American jurisdiction. She brings the same skepticism to the numbers on this site.

What I cover

  • Fact-checking. Every operator claim, every regulatory citation, every dollar figure on this site is checked against the underlying source before publication. If it is not source-able, it does not appear.
  • Market data. Alberta-specific market sizing, traffic indices, rake economics, and rewards-programme analysis.
  • Regulatory frameworks. Bill 48, the AGLC Internet Gaming Standards and Requirements, FINTRAC obligations, and the operator-registration process.
  • Player-value analysis. Bonus terms, rakeback structures, leaderboard mechanics, and the difference between headline and effective value.

How I check

Every claim on this site falls into one of three categories: verified to a primary source, reasonable estimate with the source identified, or forecast that is labelled as such. The verified category does most of the work. Primary sources we use most often: AGLC’s published Standards and Requirements, the Alberta iGaming Corporation operator list, the AGLC Annual Report, Statistics Canada quarterly population estimates, and the operators’ own published terms and conditions.

If a claim cannot be verified, it gets pulled or relabelled. If a claim later turns out to be wrong, the change goes in the corrections log with date, original wording, and corrected wording.

Editorial disclosure

My fact-checking is independent of the editorial scoring. I do not hold personal accounts at any operator for the purpose of receiving affiliate commissions. I have no equity, consulting, or advisory relationship with any operator listed on this site. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed here and on any review I have touched.

Disputed findings and any factual changes are tracked in the Corrections Log. If you find a number, claim, or citation on this site that does not check out, email me at factcheck@albertapoker.com and I will look at it.
